Moreover, students are incredibly engaged on-campus and in all aspects of the community, in my experience, if a student wants to be in a leadership position, then there are plenty of opportunities through clubs, organizations, and on campus jobs. It is not unusual for students and professors to meet outside of the classroom and eat together. Staff and faculty are truly dedicated to developing personal and long-lasting mentoring relationships with students. "Scripps College does an amazing job of preparing students to think critically, question, and explore their interests while discovering new ones. However, in the years since my graduation, I believe this has changed, as students are given more practical assistance when planning for their futures." I remember the students were treated as independent adults expected to rise to the high academic standards of the college. Scripps herself said, The paramount obligation of a college is to develop in its students the ability to think clearly and independently, and the ability to live confidently, courageously, and hopefully. ![]() However, that is not to say that the curriculum was not rigorous. I can remember sitting in the courtyard or under a tree, or in the beautiful Denison Library reading my books or writing an outline for a paper. The founder of Scripps College, Ellen Browning Scripps, believed that one's education was enhanced by lovely surroundings and architecture. Also, the campus is gorgeous and peaceful, further lending a focus to my experience, which may not have been possible if I were in a distracting, urban environment without beautifully, well-designed architecture. In addition, professors and instructors were readily available for questions and meetings. "Scripps College provided me with a wonderful education in a rarefied environment in which class sizes never exceeded 15 students. ![]()
